Spent this past Wednesday near Randleman, N.C., at Richard Petty’s Museum so I could interview him for a project.

I !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! but was just going through my 150 pics or so and realized that I cannot possibly use them all - despite how cool they are.

So, here are a couple of the #40 Superbird. Pete Hamilton won the Daytona 500 and both races at Talladega in 1970 driving #40.

First off, there’s that wing at the top. Yeah, yeah, yeah. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

But a few more cool details.

Kinja'd!!!

Yes, the car had a keyed ignition (just right of the far-right gauge). Imagine if you lost it before the race. (This key is wired to the dash but I assume they did that later, so visitors to the museum didn’t try grabbing it for a souvenir.)

Kinja'd!!!

Gotta love the detail.

And let’s face it. Richard was the subject of the interview, but the car set the scene.

And here’s my podcast for the week. Somehow I managed to get one posted despite the excitement and hectic schedule.

Petty always seems like a good guy. Was that your perception?

One of my memories of him is seeing him at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Smiling and wearing his huge hat while being surrounded by admiring Brits. DW and Larry McReynolds were standing nearby and were largely ignored. I was able to have a talk with Larry about their trip. It was the first for all of them and it sounded like they were having a good time.

You may also want to track down Jamie Price via twitter or Facebook. He was the photog for Goodwood’s shoot a few weeks ago if I understand correctly. He got some pics of the 43 on the road.

I’m not 100% on this but I think the Petty Aspen was the first Factory built NASCAR Replica package.

Can’t wait to see the Interview!

Yes, I talked to him for over an hour. On camera and off. a VERY nice guy. And sharp too. Remembers details of stuff from 50 years ago like it was yesterday.
